Over 1 million visitors to Hamburg's fairgrounds in 2016

Three fairs hit record visitor numbers - two new fairs in 2017 and G20 summit

Over 1 million visitors flocked to events in the Congress Center Hamburg last year, a press release said Wednesday (January 25). More than 44 fairs were held on a record 1 million square metres of space in addition to another fair in Neustadt-Holstein. A record 15,278 exhibitors were also registered. The SMM, the leading international maritime trade fair, led the way with over 2,200 global exhibitors followed by WindEnergy Hamburg with over 1,400 exhibitors from 34 countries and Internorga with around 1,300 exhibitors from 25 nations. Two extra halls had to be built to accommodate SMM, but only extra hall was needed for the 90th Internorga in 2016.

Online Marketing Rockstars hit fairgrounds

Last December, the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) summit attracted over 40 foreign ministers, some 70 delegations and over 3,500 delegates and journalists to Hamburg. Around 34 guest events in Hamburg’s fairgrounds were also factors in the success of Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH (HMC). The Nordstil regional order days for all of north Germany, organised by Messe Frankfurt, were held in Hamburg. The second round of regional order days will be held in July 2017. The first Online Marketing Rockstars Festivals was staged in the fairgrounds as well as the Intergeo trade fair for geodesy, geological data and land management with over 17,000 visitors and proved big hits.

HMC organising presentations at world EXPOs

Some 292,763 visitors attended 226 events in CCH. Around half attended 96 cultural events while the other half took part in 130 meetings and congresses. Chaos Communication Congress, held between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, saw out the year 2016. The last event also marked the close of CCH for extensive renovations likely to last around two and a half years.

HMC organised 14 joint events abroad and accompanied 400 exhibitors to fairs in Rio de Janeiro, Jakarta, Tokyo and the U.S. HMC also held two premieres and became the first German company to organise participation in world EXPOs for federal German ministries. This year, HMC is taking part in 17 events abroad, the biggest of which is the German pavilion at the EXPO 2017 to be held under the theme “Energy of the Future: Dealing with the Biggest Challenge to Humanity” in the Kazakh capital of Astana. HMC has previously organised German pavilions in Saragossa, Spain in 2008, Yeosu, South Korea in 2012, and the Hamburg Houses in Shanghai, China in 2010 and the German participation in “Flowers and Children – a Green Life for Future Generations” in Antalya, Turkey last year.

Growth, premieres and politics

HMC will host two new fairs this year: home² from January 27-29, 2017 – a fair for homeowners and those interested in building and renovating. From October 13-15, the Hamburg Motor Classics will be held for the first time in Hamburg’s fairgrounds and targets fans of vintage vehicles. The Congress Center Hamburg CCH has been renovated to the tune of EUR 194 million and will host the G20 summit of heads of state and government in early July.
