OSZE Ministerial Council To Meet in Hamburg In 2016

Hamburg will be the venue of international peace negotiations. Cosmopolitanism is an important feature of the Hanseatic city

2016 under German presidency, the Ministerial Council of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) will meet in Hamburg. With 2016’s motto “Renew Dialogue, Rebuild Trust, Restore Security” the German Government strives to support the strengthening of the instruments and institutions of the OSCE. Furthermore, the confidence in Europe will be promoted.

Rebuilding Trust in Rough Times

At the closing of the OSCE Ministerial Council on 4 December in Belgrade (Serbia) , the German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced the choice of Hamburg as location of 2016’s meeting of the OSCE Ministerial Council. With reference to the terrorist attacks in Paris, the crisis in eastern Ukraine, and the influx of refugees to Europe, the foreign minister said: “In stormy weather, navigation points are important for orientation. The nautical metaphor befits the choice of the location: Hamburg. The Hanseatic City is regarded as the gateway to the world and stands for openness and tolerance!. These are values that should also characterise the German OSCE chairmanship in 2016.”

The OSCE Ministerial Council is composed of the foreign ministers of the 57 OSCE member states and is the central decision-making body of the OSCE. The Ministerial Council meets once a year towards the end of every term of chairmanship to consider issues relevant to the OSCE and take appropriate decisions.
