On Wednesday, 10 September 2015, Hamburg’s First Mayor, Olaf Scholz, and the President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation, Alfons Hörmann, officially signed Hamburg’s application as host of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Hamburg. The signing ceremony was attend by Stephanie Grebe, Paralympics participant in table tennis, Olympic hockey champion Moritz Fürste and Hamburg locals.
Claudia Bokel, spokeswoman for the Athletes Commission of the International Olympic Committee, handed the letter to IOC president Thomas Bach in Hamburg with the worda: “IOC, You’ve Got Mail. “ The former fencer had won silver with her team at the Olympic Games in Athens.
“I am delighted that Hamburg is the official German candidate to host the 2024 Summer Games 2024. We want to build the athletic stage on an open society. And we want to show in our city that transparent, compact and modern games are possible“m said Hamburg’s First Mayor Olaf Scholz.” We see ourselves in Hamburg as the gateway to the world. Thus, it would be an honour to be the gateway to the world of sports, too. The meaning of the Olympic spirit goes far beyond sport: It’s about global partnership “.
The registration period of the IOC expires on 15 September 2015. On 29 November2015, the citizens of Hamburg will have to decide on the application in a referendum.
