Retailers expecting increased turnover during Christmas period

Advent market soon to draw shoppers to downtown Hamburg. Association expecting increased turnover

Retailers in Hamburg are expecting increased turnover of 2.5 per cent (nominal) or EUR 7.5 billion in northern Germany during November and December and higher than the same period last year, according to the Handelsverband Nord on Wednesday (October 26th). Monika Dürrer, Managing Director of Handelsverband Nord, said: “Christmas business will again account for around one-fifth of retailers’ annual turnover in Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.” Turnover of around EUR 38.5 billion is expected for 2016, she added.

Live experience as opposed to online business

However, forecasts for retail in Hamburg have not yet been published. But the Christmas season will definitely draw more people into the city centre, said Brigitte Nolte, Manager of the Hamburg branch of Handelsverband Nord. “The many Christmas markets will make visiting Hamburg an experience and the city better able to compete with online business,” she noted.

Christmas markets open on November 21

The rising number of overnight stays reflects the increasing economic importance of the pre Christmas period for retailers, hotels and restaurants. According to the Statistikamt Nord, the number of overnight stays in Hamburg in December 2015 increased 4.8 per cent to 977,000 over the previous year. Guest numbers grew 3.3. per cent to 496,000. Most Christmas markets in Hamburg begin on November 21 and attract around 6 million visitors annually.
