Hamburg's inner city confirms itself as premium shopping destination

Hamburg Chamber of Commerce: no fear of e-commerce winning over high street shopping in Hamburg's inner city, which enjoys the opening of many new shops, and particularly fashion boutiques.

The number of retail stores in the city center has increased significantly in the past three years, i.e. from 973 in 2011 to 1,017 in 2014. The five per cent growth is one of the key results of the survey “Hamburg city centre – retail location No. 1 in the north” conducted and presented by the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce.

Premium destination for fashion stores

City centres have a significant influence on the image of a region. They are an important factor in the competition of metropolitan regions. As retail is crucial for the attractiveness of the City, the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce has been monitoring changes in inner city retail activities since 2010. It is thus possible today to document and analyse the profound transformation brought along by the trend for online trade.

It is positive that the number of stores has not decreased, but rather increased. This is particularly evident in the clothing industry. Despite the high market volumes of e-commerce, the number of inner-city stores in Hamburg increased from 295 to 316, i.e. by seven per cent.

High in demand by global brands

The gross floor space of retail in Hamburg’s city centre increased from 305,000 to 321,000 square metre in the past five years, confirming the unparalleled attractiveness of downtown for international labels and global brands.
