Free WLAN in downtown Hamburg

Internet surfing free in parts of city as pilot projects gets underway

A pilot project for free public WLAN was launched Thursday in Hamburg, Stromnetz Hamburg and willy.tel multimedia service provider announced at the start in the presence of Dr. Carsten Brosda, State Councillor for Culture, Media and Digital Affairs. Four access points for accesssing the free MobyKlick WLAN have been installed between Alstertor, Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz to Ballindamm and the Europa Passage. This means Hamburg is the first big city in Germany to offer the service.

“Hamburg is becoming a digital city. Digital technoloiges allow us to make our city even more liveable and competitive,” said Mayor Olaf Scholz. Stromnetz Hamburg could meet an important critera for using digital applications in public spaces with an easily acessible, affordable link to the energy network.

MobyKlick is a free WLAN network developed by willy.tel und wilhelm.tel for Hamburg. The user is shown MobyKlick for the connection in that area and receives a four-digit code to use the new, free WLAN for 24 hours.
