A First Successful Year for TUHH's Startup Dock

Innovative start-ups, tangible success stories, exciting events, and intensive networking: the concept of TUHH's startup dock bears fruit

The first calendar year since the launch of the new incubator by Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) has been more successful than expected. Many new startups have found their way to TUHH’s new consultancy for founders. They include the start-ups Session Line (social network), tabbt (social payments) or Terra pellet (production/sale of fertilisers, soil conditioners, and substrates). The teams are supported in their start-up projects by the three in-house consultants Felix Müller (Digital & Services), Daniel Priem (Green Technologies), and Dr. Andrea Otto (Life Sciences).

Early Success for Students

With such a good start, one had not to wait long for first demonstration of success for the student teams of TUHH and the Northern Institute of Technology Management (NIT). In Novmber, the founders of juicify, Lennart Tremp and Tammo Wallisch, were recognised for their wireless charging with the national Gastro Vision Förderpreis 2015. Now, the duo plans to present its innovation in front of 3,000 trade visitors and experts at the at the next Gastro Vision fair held 13-17 March at Empire Riverside Hotel Hamburg.

Hamburg Team Accepted by Microsoft’s Ventures Accelerator

Also successful in Germany’s capital Berlin were Sebastian Rösch and Maximilian Schmiedel of brightup, a smart home application in the field of lighting. For four months, they were admitted to Microsoft’s Ventures Accelerator as one of seven start-ups that successfully convinced the jury of investors and Microsoft staff. With work space provided at Microsoft’s Berlin branch “Unter den Linden”, brightup benefitted from mentor support in regard to software and business development and valuable new investor contacts.

Several Awards For Portable Device For Measuring Ground Pollution

Matthias Schmittmann and Johannes Weber o took home laurels for their portable device that records concentrations of noxious substances especially efficiently in the course of hazardous waste site management. To take the prototype of the measuring device to market readiness, the two 25-year-old students joined forces with electrical engineer Ivalyo Radev to found a business startup by the name of bentekk. Initial funding has been secured. Last May, the trio received an Exist startup grant from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy. The gas chromatograph also won them the 2014 Hamburg Innotech Prize in a startup competition launched by TuTech Innovation GmbH and hit-Technopark.

Awards Also Granted to Startup Dock

Last but not least, also the activities of Startup Dock were increasingly being recognised, with the incubator moving up ranks in the Founding Radar 2013 of the Donors’ Association for German Science. After 2012’s entry at 20th position, TUHH made it up into the top ten in the category of medium-sized universities (5,001-15,000 students). I addition, the university was praised as best practice for its activities to arouse interest in start-ups and to provide relevant know-how in this filed. In terms of start-up activities, i.e. participation in funding competitions and total number of start-ups, TUHH even climbed to second place in 2013.

Starting a Business: New Institute of Entreneurship Teaches Necessary Skills

With the TUHH Institute of Entrepreneurship, the Startup Dock made starting a business an academic study. There, all activities at curricular side will be bundled, including research. Headed by Prof Dr Christoph Ihl, the institute will offer a variety of courses on entrepreneurship to Bachelor and Master students of the TUHH and NIT.

European Summer School On Startup Engineering In Spring 2015

Due to the huge success of the European Summer School on Startup Engineering by Prof Ihl und Dr Bernhard Doll (Orange Hills) last September, a Spring School is now envisaged for lent 2015. In addition, a series of lectures hat been launched, covering all aspects on the formation of the new business at twelve evenings.
