People in Hamburg to spend EUR 456 on Christmas gifts
The Handelsverband Nord has forecast Christmas growth of 3.9 per cent in 2016 over last year. Retailers would earn turnover of EUR 2.44 billion in November and December, according to forecasts. Brigitte Nolte, Manager of the Hamburg branch of Handelsverband Nord, noted: “The consumption mood is very good,” and online trade is driving growth. “We are reaching a five-year high,” she added.
People in Hamburg are likely to spend EUR 456 each, slightly less than the EUR 477 average across Germany, on Christmas presents, according to a survey by the University of Applied Sciences for Economics and Management (FOM). Nolte added: “Guests from the surrounding regions on one-day outings are likely to account for good sales.”
Gift vouchers proving popular
However, the real Christmas shopping spree starts in December. More than 36 per cent buy during the last week before Christmas. Most men are still out and about looking for presents whereas women tend to shop earlier. Some 25 per cent of women but only 14 per cent of men purchase Christmas gifts in October and November. Gift vouchers, books, stationery, concert and theatre tickets as well as cosmetics are the favourites among people in Hamburg. Those who have already purchased tickets as gifts for concerts in the new Elbphilharmonie to open in January are among the lucky few.
