43 Companies Recognised with the Hamburg Family Seal

The distinctions honours the family-friendliness of companies that leads to a better work-life-balance of employees

In the Hamburg Museum of Work of Barmek, 43 small and medium-sized Hamburg companies have been recognised for their family-friendly policy with the Hamburg Family Seal. The certificates were presented by top representatives of the Hamburg Alliance for Families.

“Hamburg is on its way to become the most family-friendly city in Germany. The flexible day care voucher by the City of Hamburg and the expansion of day care offers for children not only met the demands, but also guarantees early access to education – regardless of the budget of the parents. Furthermore, parents will find it easier to balance life and work”, stated Jan Pörksen, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Family and Integration.

Important Locational Factor

“Of course, good working conditions also add to the family-friendliness of a city in order to allow employees to reconcile work and family life or work and care”, Pörksen continued. More and more companies are confronting this challenge. A family-friendly personnel policy is an important factor in the competition for well-trained staff. Particularly young professionals and executives – both women and men – increasingly demand these offers, and put a good life-work balance ahead of a career. “Family-friendliness in the company also has another effect: in many cases it its the prerequisite for women making a career”, said Corinna Nienstedt, managing director of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce.

Working Environment as Important as Good Pay

Employees with children want to have a family-friendly work environment. 90 per cent of them call it as important as a good pay”, explainsHjalmar Stemmann, Vice President of the Hamburg Chamber of Crafts and Trades.

In crafts and skilled trades, 86 per cent of businesses thus have already been offering family-friendly working schedules, ranging from part-time arrangements, working time accounts, to other forms of flexible daily and weekly working hours. Other family-friendly options include a slow return to work after parental leave, assistance with childcare, or free time to care for family members.
