Companies to become envoys for clean air

Extension of Hamburg air quality signed. New partners in network

Hamburg’s senate and economy have extended the “Partnership for Air Quality and Low-Emission Mobility”, signed in 2012 to 2020, as part of a joint effort to improve the quality of air in the city. This alliance will help companies lower emissions as part of their operational mobility. Newcomers to the network are over 200 partner companies including Mercedes-Benz plant of Daimler AG, HAMBURG WASSER, Trankvile electric vehicles and bicycle courier services.

New evaluating procedure

The extension to the contract was signed Friday by Environment Senator Jens Kerstan, Economics Senator Frank Horch, Josef Katzer, President of the Chamber of Crafts, and Fritz Horst Melsheimer, President of the Chamber of Commerce, as part of a New Year’s breakfast with partners. The agreement foresees a new, improved procedure to evaluate measures carried out by the partners. All newcomers and hitherto partners have one year to outline three measures and prove that they have been conducted in their company. The extension aims to encourage more companies to commit to cleaner, operational mobility.

Extending the network

Horch said: “The air quality partnership is a successful and exemplary collaboration with Hamburg’s economy on a voluntary basis – for which I thank both chambers. The advancement of the publicly accessible charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, expanding local public transport and promoting cycling are important contributions towards lowering emissions.” He added: “We cannot rest. Our aim is to further expand the existing network, to raise awareness of low-emission mobility and to encourage many more companies to take part.”

Vehicles with alternative drive

Newcomers to the network are keen to achieve a better quality of air. Daimler’s own fleet of vehicles, for instance, has many low nitrogen oxide, petrol-run vehicles. The factory promotes cycling by offering staff safe, roofed parking areas near the entrance in addition to indoor lockers and showers. Hamburg WASSER’s fleet has 177 natural-gas powered vehicles, which can be refuelled with biomethane gained from the purification process. Over 40 per cent of the vehicles in the entire fleet are alternative drive. Hamburg WASSER is also taking part in the “Bike to Work” campaign.

First vehicles presented

Trankvile electrics is banking on electric mobility and is using electric scooters and bicycles for company transport. Three companies namely inline Kurierdienst GmbH, 29 19 19 Kurier AG and City Express Logistik GmbH are using the new offer to distinguish bicycle couriers as environmental couriers. City Express is one of the very first partners to the air quality commitment while the other two bicycle courier services are new members.
