Submission phase Crystal Cabin Award 2018 starts - organisers focusing on trends, new categories

The submission phase for the Crystal Cabin Award 2018 is now on and in new categories, a press release said Monday. Applications can be submitted until October 27, 2017 on www.crystal-cabin-award.com. The winners will be announced during the Aircraft Interiors Expo (April 10–12, 2018) in Hamburg.

The 12th Crystal Cabin Award will recognise and honour the best ideas for the aircraft cabin. The prize, launched and presented in Hamburg, has become a trend barometer for a whole industry: the winning ideas and products shape and guide the cabin industry now and in the future. In 2017, Airbus and Delta Air Lines were among the award winners. But the upcoming generation of talent from the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences also won over the Judging Panel with no fewer than 85 shortlisted submissions; the most recent edition of the coveted Crystal Cabin Award set a new record.

New category “Inflight Entertainment and Connectivity“

The Crystal Cabin Award is synonymous with the future of the passenger experience. It honours efficiency, sustainability and creative “outside the box” thinking for the aircraft cabin. The recent, winning innovations included a flexible seat rail concept developed by Recaro in co-operation with Airbus and THK. The rail allows for spontaneous configuration of seating rows depending on a flight’s load factor. Diehl’s winning idea will reduce cabling requirements and significantly lower the weight of aircraft by transmitting data via the existing, on-board power cables. Such connectivity and communication solutions and in-flight entertainment concepts give passengers the greatest possible flexibility and are gaining importance across the industry. To cater to this trend, the Crystal Cabin Award will be awarded in the new “Inflight Entertainment and Connectivity” (formerly “Electronic Systems”).

Global coverage of contest

A Judging Panel of 28 experts selects three finalists in each category. Thus, contestants get an opportunity to present their concept to movers and shakers in the industry in person at the Final Viewing. A victory at the Crystal Cabin Award is unequivocal recognition by global specialists in the sector. The latest trends also garner global attention and so far more than 600 online publications in some 60 countries have reported on this year’s awards ceremony.
