Higher passenger numbers are expected at Hamburg Airport at the start of the autumn break in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein on Saturday. Over 1,000 flights with more than 135,000 passengers are expected from October 14-18, 2017 leading to record capacity. Well over 200 aircraft took off Wednesday from the airport. “The peak season starts at Hamburg Airport when north Germans take off on their holidays. Spain, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands top the list of the favourite destinations,” said Janet Niemeyer, Press Officer at Hamburg Airport.
Passengers from Hamburg churning up growth
Last year, around 16.22 million passengers – a rise of 3.9 per cent over 2015 – passed through Hamburg Airport. Passengers from Hamburg accounted for the strongest growth. In 2016, Hamburg Airport had around 750,000 more passengers from Hamburg than in 2015. Around 61 per cent of all passengers starting their journeys in Hamburg hailed from the city itself. Every fourth passenger came from Schleswig-Holstein. The number of flight movements also grew 1.4 per cent in 2016 over 2015 and the trend is likely to remain positive.
