In 2014, more than 7.4 million people travelled by plane from Hamburg Airport, which thus enjoyed a 9.5 per cent rise in passenger figures compared to last year. 71 per cent of these passengers left Hamburg Airport on their way to an international destination, flying abroad via a direct flight or changing planes somewhere else. International travel from Hamburg Airport thus increased by 11.9 per cent, the Northern Office of Statistics reported.
Hamburg Airport’s Most Popular Destinations
The most frequent destination country for air travel from Hamburg was Spain. More than one million passengers (+23.1 per cent) left for the sunny south, with the majority heading to the Balearic Islands. The number of travelers to the UK rose by 7.5 per cent, Travels to Turkey declined slightly to 465,200 passengers. Overall, 4.4 million people commenced at Hamburg Airport their travel to other European countries, i.e. 13.3 percent more than in 2013.
Fewer Departures from Lübeck
Non-European long-haul flights increased by 5.5 per cent compared to 2013. Travels to Asia topped the statistics with 397,500 people (+5.4 per cent) departing mostly to the United Arab Emirates., followed by 336,600 travelling to North Amercia . Domestic flights reported a 3.7 per cent increase to two million passengers. The airport of Lübeck-Blankensee, however, continued its negative performance. With Ryanair lost for Lübeck, only 84,000 flew from the airport in the south of the Hanseatic city, and thus only half as many as in 2013.
